500 metres of underwater pipeline for Elvia
– Efficient installation with Hallingplast SESU Cable, a pre-weighted cable protection pipe.
Across the Femsjøen lake in Østfold, Norway, nearly 500 metres of service pipeline is being laid for the client Elvia. The pipeline is routed inside Hallingplast’s SESU Cable, a pre-weighted cable protection pipe consisting of a PE pipe with a protective and mineral-filled layer.
“This is unique and exciting from a professional perspective,” says project engineer Espen Vik, who closely monitors the service cable being unwound from the drum. A powerful winch on Storøya island pulls the PX cable into almost 500 metres of Hallingplast SESU Cable cable protection pipe across the lake, up into a trench on the other side and into the yard where the cable connects to the property’s electrical cabinet.
Easy to install
Hallingplast SESU Cable was delivered in 12-metre lengths and mirror welded at the installation site. After the welding process, the cable protection pipe was “stored” floating on the water.
“The pre-weighted cable protection pipe with a protective jacket streamlines the installation,” says plant manager Magnus Wold-Hansen. “The alternative would have been to use ordinary PE pipes with concrete weights or another type of weight. The pre-weighted design makes installation much easier and thus more cost-effective.”
Magnus has already had good experience of water and sewage pipes with Hallingplast SESU, a similar pre-weighted pipe system for underwater pipelines made of PE100 RC with a mineral-filled layer. “It’s very smooth. We weld the pipes together into a finished pipe, lay it out on the water and finally pull it into the right position. When everything is done, the cable is pulled through the pipe, we fill the rest of the pipe with water, and the cable pipe then settles nicely on the bottom where it should be,” he says.
Easy to maintain
Espen Vik says that the installation of a new service pipeline to Storøya is his first project with Hallingplast SESU Cable. “It seems to be a good quality cable pipe,” he says. “By placing the PX cable in a cable pipe, we get a more future-proof and maintenance-friendly cable installation. Any future replacement will be significantly smoother and easier. In addition, the pipeline is more secure in a cable protection pipe.”
