No-dig or trenchless installation is becoming increasingly common as methods such as guided and horizontal drilling, sliplining and pipe fracturing in many cases provide several benefits in terms of environment, time and economy for the pipeline owner. However, a disadvantage of these methods is that the pipe is often pulled through the ground with no control over whether the pipe is damaged or not. If the PE pipe is damaged, the service life of the pipe will be affected, with consequences for future generations.

In order to prevent potential damage to the pipe in these types of alternative installation methods, Hallingplast has developed Hallingplast JAPI, a pipe with an extra-high-strength outer PP jacket that protects the media pipe and minimises the risk of shortening the service life of the PE pipe during installation.

The toughest pressure pipe on the market

Hallingplast JAPI (“Jacketed Pipe”) has a protective PP jacket that is, for example, 3.8 mm thick for pipe dimensions 225 mm and SDR class 17, which means that the jacket represents 28% of the total thickness of the pipe. The thickness of the jacket gradually increases as the pipe dimension increases and all pipes above 355 mm have a jacket that is 5.0 mm thick, providing excellent protection against cracks and point loads. Pipes with significantly thinner jackets are often found on the market. These do not provide the same protection for the media pipe that a high-strength jacket provides. Therefore, always check the jacket thickness when choosing pipes to be sure to get the best possible protection for the pipe.

Hallingplast JAPI is a jacket pipe made of PP, which is a stiffer material than PE, making it more resistant to shear forces that occur in trenchless installations. It is also harder and provides less friction compared to PE. PP has no adhesion to PE, which means that the PP jacket can be peeled.

Hallingplast JAPI is also available for gas pipes

Hallingplast JAPI GAS is manufactured according to standard EN 1555 and meets the requirements of the Swedish Gas Association standard EGN 2023. The pipe has a solid yellow orange jacket with green stripes and is available in dimensions 32–630 mm.

Benefits of Hallingplast JAPI:

  • Minimises the risk of damage to the pipe during installation
  • Best option for trenchless installations
  • Can be delivered in coils up to D180
  • The pipe is stripped at both ends at the factory and is thus prepared for welding
